Perfectly Positioned – The Antibes Boat Show

As the first day of spring passes and the climate on the Cote d’Azur begins to warm the first of the contractors have moved into town and begun erecting the infrastructure for what has become an on of the most important fixtures on the yacht calendar, the Antibes Yacht Show 2013.

Whilst the first show was only seven years ago, the strategic scheduling of this event just before the start of the European charter season has led to the event becoming not only hugely popular with the paying public (the 2012 show attracted 13,000 people despite some abysmal weather) but also crucial to yacht brokers and charter companies from 65 countries looking to start the season with some business. (At the 2012 show 12 out of 130 superyachts on show received serious offers for purchase.)

The show – this year to be held between 18th and 21st April – takes place in and around the town’s magnificent Port Vauban, Europe’s largest marina and home to some of the world’s most luxurious private yachts. Port Vauban is also where some of the most exclusive luxury yachts for charter are berthed before the summer season begins.

There is also a refit centre at the show for those owners looking for advice on the potential refit of their yacht.

The First Live Superyacht Auction

The Antibes Yacht Show is to host a live superyacht auction on Saturday, April 20, at 3.30pm. The main action takes place in the VIP Lounge of the International Yacht Club d’Antibes, with a live feed beamed back to the Star Deck in Monaco (above the Stars’n’Bars) allowing potential owners to bid remotely. The whole event is being dubbed the Prestige Yacht Auction.

Matanthar will be included in the first superyacht auction

The list of yachts offered for auction is still being put together but includes the 55-metre Turquoise, built by Proteksan and launched in 2011, and the 30.8-metre Matanthar, a 2000 launch from Heesen. The yachts are being sold subject to survey, and the organisers are working in tandem with leading brokerage houses. Yachts must be available for inspection for at least a month before the auction. Organisers are expecting a Eurocopter EC135 helicopter to also be on offer.
