Canary Island’s finest marina
Las Palmas marina is the start point of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers and many other trans-Atlantic crossings and becomes increasingly busy from late October onwards as crews prepare for the 2,800 mile voyage to the Caribbean.
The marina offers more than 600 berths for boats of up to 50m length with a maximum draught of 5m. It is a fully-serviced marina, with water and electricity at the each berth as well as wifi internet access.
There is a fuel station providing diesel and unleaded petrol, plus a repair yard with the most extensive facilities in the Canary Islands, including specialist workshops, riggers, marine engineers and sail makers. The boatyard has a travel lift for vessels up to 20m length, 6m beam and 60 tonne displacement.
Superb local facilities
The marina is located in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz, just a few minutes from the historical city centre and the island’s best shopping area. This helps to make it an ideal place in which to provision a yacht before a long passage. On site there are also shops, chandlers, watersports providers and a variety of cafés and restaurants.
Non-ARC yachts may struggle to find a berth here before the 200 plus boats leave for the Caribbean island of St Lucia towards the end of November each year – in 2012 they depart on November 25.
For those already in the islands, there are plenty of alternative marinas and anchorages in the Canary Islands and, in any case, the Trade Winds that carry yachts across the Atlantic tend to be better established a little later in the season.
The Islands are also an excellent year-round sailing destination in their own right, with much quicker access to and from Europe than the popular Caribbean destinations and with little time difference.
