Canal Boats Stranded as water levels fall

Boats have become trapped in a 10-mile stretch of the Kennet and Avon canal after water levels reached their lowest in 90 years.

The dry summer and autumn has forced British Waterways to close off runs from Wilton in Wiltshire to and between Kintbury and Newbury in Berkshire.

Owners of boats trapped in this section have been told to adjust their mooring ropes to accommodate the changes in water levels.

British Waterways is looking at ways to increase the water supply, but the lack of rain has left many nearby reservoirs severely depleted. The public corporation said it could take some time for water levels to return to normal.
